New Horizons in Responsible Gambling Conference: Celebrating Five Years of Championing Research and Awareness

21/02/2017

Leaders and innovators from the international responsible and problem gambling community are taking centre stage at the fifth annual New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference in Vancouver, February 21 - 22, 2017. Hosted by BCLC, New Horizons presents an opportunity to expand awareness and share the latest research in problem and responsible gambling.

Margaret Trudeau is the keynote speaker for day one of this year’s conference. Ms. Trudeau will speak about the stigma surrounding mental illness and her own personal journey as featured in her bestselling book Changing My Mind. Day two will feature a keynote address by Dr. Luke Clark, Director of the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC, who will present research on modern slot machine design and the implications for ongoing responsible gambling practices.

For this year’s milestone event, an esteemed list of speakers and researchers will also be presenting compelling responsible gambling content and research, including:

  • Dr. Jeffrey Derevensky: Fantasy Sports Wagering: Should We Be Concerned?
  • Dr. Tim Fong: Luck and Fate: Cultural, Social and Psychological Characteristics of Asian Gamblers
  • Dr. Sally Gainsbury: Who ‘Likes’ Gambling? The Impact of Social Media Marketing
  • Hyoun S. Kim: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Social Casino Gambling
  • Dr. Debi LaPlante: Evaluating Responsible Gambling Programs in Emerging Gambling Markets
  • Dr. Tilman Lesch: The Quality of Quantity - Behavioural Indicators of Risky Online Gambling

A Public Health panel, titled “Casinos in Local Communities: Experiences and Outcomes,” will focus on both the positive and negative impacts casinos can have on their host local governments and surrounding communities. The panellists include a regulator, an operator and a public health specialist, all of whom will share their unique experiences and perspectives on this topic.

Drawing from leading research from both local and global perspectives, this annual conference attracts an impressive line-up of thought-leaders and industry experts, in addition to a diverse audience of researchers, industry representatives, prevention specialists, and treatment specialists.
