New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference costs available on bclc.com27/06/2017
In accordance with our commitment to accountability and transparency, BCLC has released cost details of hosting the annual New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference.
Financial summaries for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 conferences are now publicly available on the corporation’s new Reports and Disclosures page on bclc.com, as well as records of invoices for the 2017 event.
On average 275 delegates from academia, industry, government and the community attend the conference every year to learn about best practices and research findings in the field of responsible gambling.
BCLC and the Province budget an average of $9.5 million per year for responsible gambling programming and supports. Included in this amount is the investment to host New Horizons each year. Wherever possible, BCLC finds cost savings to help lower expenses. As noted in the records, sixty per cent of the 2017 conference costs were recovered through sponsorships and registration fees. As a result the total cost to BCLC to host this event was $147,000.
The learning that has come from New Horizons has helped BCLC continue to strengthen and grow its responsible gambling programs. In recent years, BCLC has launched or undertaken a number of new initiatives to support B.C. players. These include GamTalk (www.gamtalk.org/) , RG Check (www.rgcheck.ca), and a number of research initiatives that have provided new insights into behaviours and attitudes that can reduce the risk of developing a gambling disorder.
BCLC will continue to proactively disclose costs associated with the New Horizons in Responsible Gambling conference and details about investments in responsible gambling, following the end of each fiscal year.
