Set for Life win is just what the doctor ordered23/02/2015
It was just another day at the office for Merritt resident, Drew Soderberg, that is until he decided to take a break and walk over to the 7-11 to buy a snack and a Scratch & Win ticket that would change his life.
After finishing up at the clinic where he works, Drew headed home, where he left the ticket on the counter for his wife, Deidre, to scratch. When she saw the three “cash,” symbols, she started screaming.
Drew was in the other room when he heard the screams and initially thought his wife had seen a spider.
“I turned on all the lights in the house to make sure that what I was seeing was real,” recalls Deidre. “When I realized I had won, I screamed. We had to look over the instructions on the back over and over again to make sure it really was a winner.”
The couple returned back to the 7-11 to have the ticket verified, but even still, they had a hard time believing they had really won.
“It didn’t really sink in until we had it validated today,” Drew says. “I can’t believe it.”
The couple recently moved to Merritt so that Drew would have more opportunities to practice medicine, working at both the Emergency Room and local medical clinic. The Soderbergs decided to take the lump sum of $675,000, and plan to use the winnings to pay off their mortgage and Drew’s medical school bills.
“We will be debt free and that will be very nice,” he smiles.
The couple is expecting their first baby in August and anticipates some of the money will also be used towards setting up a college fund.
The winning ticket was purchased at the 7-11 in Merritt.
