Vancouver resident plans on paying winnings forward

Guangxiao Chen is $500,000 richer after winning the Extra on the July 3, 2015 Lotto Max draw.

Chen originally thought he won $1000 and was pleasantly surprised when he discovered his prize was in fact $500,000!

“I had to look at my ticket a second time to confirm I matched 4/4 numbers on the Extra,” recalled Chen. “Because I was so shocked, I waited a few weeks for the news to sink in before claiming my prize.”

The Vancouverite says he plays the lottery for fun and enjoys the excitement associated with checking the winning numbers every week.

“I play the lottery for fun and my family reminds me that my hobby ends up helping the community and the province,” said Chen.

Chen says he never expected to win the lottery and as a result, doesn’t have a list of items to purchase with his winnings. Instead, Chen wants to share his windfall with those in need.

“I am going to donate a portion of this money to the needy and perhaps to young, dedicated students who cannot afford to further their education,” said Chen.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Point Grey Pharmacy in Vancouver.
