Keeping gambling fun for all players is an important part of being socially responsible. The fact is, for some players gambling can be too much of a good thing. So we developed a way to help. It's called GameSense.
GameSense is an innovative way to present responsible gambling information. It's the umbrella under which we make all responsible gambling tools available to players. It combines responsible play education with information on the risks associated with gambling.
- Game reinforces focus on keeping it fun.
- Sense involves improving Players' knowledge and awareness of how the games work and the odds of winning and losing.
We designed GameSense to be friendly and approachable. For example, we use games and promotions in casinos to help players learn about the odds of winning and dispel myths. We also use entertaining television and movie theatre ads to help people understand what responsible gambling is all about. If you're experiencing difficulty with gambling, we're there to help and point you in the right direction for assistance and support.
BCLC is committed to being a leader in responsible gambling through research and innovation. But more importantly, BCLC wants to encourage all British Columbians to make healthy choices around gambling.
Awards and certification
BCLC has been recognized by the World Lottery Association(WLA) for adopting and putting into action international Responsible Gambling Principles aimed at protecting players in B.C. The WLA has seven principles: player protection, collaboration with other stakeholders, research, promotion, informed player choice, monitoring and reporting. We've been recognized by the WLA for our plans in all seven areas.
In 2013 BCLC was re-certified at Level 4 of the World Lottery Association’s Responsible Gambling (RG) framework. Level four is categorized as ‘continuous improvement’ and is the highest level an organization can achieve through the WLA.
To attain re-certification at Level 4, BCLC provided evidence of a strategic plan focused on continuous improvement that includes program evaluation, identification of gaps and commitment of resources to strengthen areas of improvement over time.
The assurance of an independent validator is important as it confirms that BCLC is honouring its commitment to keep RG at the forefront of day-to-day business.
In 2010, we received the highest level of certification for programs that were well-established, the best in the industry, and showed potential for continual improvement.
In 2010 the WLA awarded BCLC the “Best overall Responsible Gaming Program Award”, which honours one gaming corporation in the world every two years for innovation and adherence to best practices.
