Raymond Kelderman thought his eyes were playing tricks on him when he saw that he had won $1 million from the Lotto 6/49 Guaranteed Prize Draw on September 16, 2020.

Kelderman, who lives in Coquitlam and purchased his ticket at Express News on Como Lake Avenue, was waiting for his coffee to brew when he scanned his ticket with the BCLC Lotto! app.

“I thought, ‘Am I seeing right?’” he recalled. He assumed he wasn’t, and poured his first cup of coffee of the day and read the paper. After he finished his morning routine, he checked the ticket again: That was when he realized his eyesight was just fine.

“I was in awe,” he said. “The reality of the situation didn’t set in.”

Next, Kelderman took a screenshot of his winning message and texted it to a close friend.

“My friend thought it was for $100,000 — I told her to look a little closer. She said, ‘Are you kidding?’”

Kelderman claimed his prize using BCLC’s alternate prize-claim process, and said his win means he can retire earlier than expected. He’s planning to travel extensively, once it’s safe to do so, including to Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Germany, Italy and Cuba.

So far in 2020, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $86 million in winnings from Lotto 6/49.
