As a Vancouver Island truck driver, stopping to fill-up for gas is a typical part of Matyas Deri’s routine, but one such recent stop turned out to be anything but ordinary.

Deri was filling-up at the Jingle Pot Gas N Go on Jingle Pot Road in Nanaimo when he decided to purchase a Set for Life Scratch & Win ticket that netted him $675,000.

“I always liked the idea of being Set for Life,” he said, noting it’s the only lottery game he plays. Before heading back on the road, Deri decided to scan his ticket from his truck, using the BCLC Lotto! app.

“I heard the noise so thought I had won a free ticket,” Deri said. “When I looked at the screen, it said annuity. I had to check again to make sure I was seeing it right.”

Once he realized he’d won the top prize, Deri called his wife to share the good news.

“I Facetimed her to show her the ticket, but I was shaking so badly she could barely see it!”

Deri said the family plans to take a trip to Disneyland once it’s safe to do so, and in the meantime surprised his kids with new LEGO sets. He and his wife also plan to purchase a new home.
