$2 Million Birthday Win No Joke for Victoria BC/49 Player

Jerry Dyck of Victoria won $2 million playing BC/49 on January 9, 2021.

Jerry Dyck’s decision to treat himself to a lottery ticket on his birthday turned into the best gift ever for the Victoria resident after he matched all six numbers from the January 9, 2021 BC/49 draw to win the game’s top prize: $2 million.

The retired electrician said he was running errands in Duncan when he purchased the ticket at W.S. Supermarket. He was at home with his daughter and son-in-law enjoying eggs benedict for breakfast when he decided to check it on the BCLC Lotto! app.

“I could not believe it,” Dyck said. “I thought someone was playing a prank on me.”

Once he realized it was no joke, he shared the news with his daughter, who started dancing with him in the living room.

“My son-in-law was putting my grandkid down for a nap, so we were trying to jump up and down and celebrate as quietly as possible,” Dyck recalled of the morning after his birthday.

In addition to gifting some of his win to family, Dyck says he plans to purchase a new RV to drive across Canada in, once it’s safe to travel again. It’s a trip he’s long dreamed of taking.

With a top prize of $2 million, BC/49 is just another reason to love living in B.C.! In 2020, British Columbians received more than $17 million in BC/49 prizes. Anyone can win and #YouCouldBeNext. Watch some amazing lottery winner stories at
