Strategic Infrastructure Reserve

In 2022, the City of Nanaimo allocated its share of provincial gambling revenue from hosting Casino Nanaimo to the Strategic Infrastructure Reserve (SIR), and toward reducing property taxes. The SIR provides funding for a variety of initiatives and capital infrastructure projects that contribute to the community.

In 2022, $515,800 from the SIR funded transportation improvements including enhanced pedestrian visibility, safety and comfort, traffic signal and transit stop accessibility improvements, and a downtown transit exchange redesign.

As well, the fund contributed $83,536 to recreation amenities like new stadium bleachers and a new artificial turf field at Loudon Park. About $250,000 funded a Community Clean Team to increase cleanliness of public spaces in the downtown and parks.

Local Love BC: Loaves & Fishes Food Bank

BCLC launched a unique fundraising experience that had double impact in communities across B.C. The campaign supported businesses and Food Banks, across the province, in select municipalities. In Nanaimo, the campaign supported the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank. Its successful Food 4U Food Recovery Program partners with local grocers to make sure perishable food is not going to waste.
