Balance fun with facts at Responsible Gambling Awareness Week in Greater Victoria

Most adult British Columbians gamble at least once a year, whether they buy a lottery ticket, bet in a casino or gamble online. It’s a popular form of entertainment so it’s important to balance the fun with the facts.

This year, BCLC, in partnership with the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch’s BC Responsible Problem Gambling Program (BC RPGP) and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation will host Responsible Gambling Awareness Week (RGAW) in Greater Victoria from February 14 to 20, 2016.

RGAW is a fun, community-based program aimed at promoting responsible gambling practices and raising awareness about the resources available to help reduce problem gambling.
Local residents can learn the facts and get tips about setting limits while winning prizes at the Ok to Play? RGAW event at the View Royal Casino on Monday, February 15 from 12 – 4PM. Residents can also check out the Ok to Play? booth at the Victoria Royals hockey game on Friday, February 19 from 7 – 9PM.

Greater Victoria is one of six communities across the province hosting a Responsible Gambling Awareness Week from February 14 to April 9. Other communities to host an RGAW this year are Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, Richmond and Fort St John. Find out more about the RGAW events

Hon. Michael de Jong, Minister of Finance:
“The more people know, the better equipped they are to make healthy decisions about gambling. That's what Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is all about. This event provides a forum to promote healthy choices and raise awareness of the free support services available to B.C. residents.”

Jim Lightbody, President & CEO, BCLC:
“At BCLC, we look out for our players because it’s the right thing to do. This means being transparent and providing our players with the facts about gambling so they can make informed choices. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is one more way we can educate our players so that gambling remains a fun form of entertainment.”

Chuck Keeling, Vice President, Stakeholder Relations and Responsible Gambling, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation:
“Great Canadian Gaming Corporation is proud to take part in this initiative. Our players are our business and it is very important to us as the service provider, to ensure gambling is delivered in the most responsible way. Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is an excellent forum for both our players and our gaming staff. We are looking forward to hosting an event at the View Royal Casino on Monday, February 15 from noon until 4pm.”
