Our gambling facility service providers and retailers must follow the standards, policies and procedures set out by us — these include responsible gambling standards.

Internally, we conduct social responsibility assessments on any proposed new product, service or marketing to ensure they're developed in a responsible way.

We are not alone in our commitment to responsible gambling. Many levels of government, national and international bodies, have set out standards for responsible gambling and social responsibility. We see those standards as an opportunity for continuous improvement.

Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch

Our provincial regulator, the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, sets standards which BCLC and, in turn, our service providers must meet.

Those standards include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring all marketing material presents gambling in a responsible manner
  • Distributing responsible gambling information in easily accessible areas
  • Clearly stating odds of winning
  • Protecting minors from gambling
  • Providing information that allows for good player choices
  • Educating gambling staff on appropriate response
  • Voluntary self-exclusion

World Lottery Association

In 2013, BCLC was re-certified at Level 4 certification for responsible gambling programs from the World Lottery Association (WLA). This is the highest level of certification achievable through the WLA, which represents the interests of some 140 government-controlled gaming organizations from more than 70 countries.

An international panel for the WLA's Responsible Gambling Framework awarded the certification for policies and procedures in accordance with its Responsible Gambling Principles.

Certification is valid for three years and BCLC will submit its application for re-certification in 2016.

RG Check

RG Check is an accreditation program created by the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) based on the RGC's Responsible Gambling Index (standards). The RGC is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of problem gambling. The program offers gaming companies the opportunity of an independent endorsement of the quality of their responsible gambling safety net.

In 2011, B.C.'s casinos and community gaming centres began the extensive RG Check accreditation process. We’re proud to report that all gambling facilities in B.C. are now RG Check Certified.
