Shannon and Karsten Von Richter were twice as excited to win $3,333,333.40 from the September 30, 2023 Lotto 6/49 draw, after realizing Shannon purchased the same set of numbers twice. At first, the Von Richters thought it was peculiar that there were two winners in Port Moody and one in Ontario splitting the $5-million Classic Jackpot, but they quickly discovered why that was.

“I didn’t realize I had already bought for that date,” recalled Shannon. “At first, I thought it’s weird – what are the chances that two people in Port Moody won with the same numbers!”

Shannon was at home with her daughter when she realized both the tickets were winners and instructed her daughter to call her dad. “I checked the ticket visually online and then used the [BCLC Lotto! App] to validate it later,” recalled Shannon.

“I just didn’t believe it!” said Karsten.

The Port Moody couple already had a celebratory dinner and is thinking through its future plans.

“This gives us more freedom and makes us more comfortable. We will figure things out once it settles down a bit,” said Karsten.

On how it feels to win the lottery?

“Amazing!” said Shannon.

The winning tickets were purchased at Thrifty Foods on Brew Street in Port Moody.
