Community is more than an idea in New Westminster; it’s a way of being, deeply rooted in its neighbourhoods and residents. That “New Westie” spirit is at the heart of The Habitat, a new outdoor space in Queen’s Park designed to bring people together in meaningful ways.
Nestled among lush greenery, the Habitat features covered pavilions for hosting workshops and classes, an accessible boardwalk to promote inclusion, and Indigenous agricultural forms that honour local heritage and sustainability. Here, creation and tradition flourish side by side.
The Habitat was made possible through a partnership between the City of New Westminster, BCLC and Gateway Casinos. To celebrate in the new space, BCLC hosted a crafting event that invited community members to experience the venue, craft seasonal centrepieces, enjoy live jazz and share conversation. It was a glimpse of what the Habitat promises: a place to connect.
This project was supported by BCLC’s Host Local Government program, which shares gambling revenue with communities that host casinos. New Westminster is one of 33 communities across B.C. that benefit from this funding, helping cities invest in local priorities – from infrastructure improvements to cultural initiatives – and creating lasting benefits for residents.
For BCLC, the Habitat reflects its social purpose: generating win-wins for the greater good. “Every time someone plays with BCLC, they’re helping fund projects like the Habitat – projects that strengthen community and create opportunities for people to connect,” said Lara Gerrits, BCLC’s Director of Social Purpose, Partnerships and Engagement. “This is our social purpose coming to life in New Westminster.”
