The City of Prince Rupert allocates its share of provincial gaming revenue to Community Enhancement Grants, which are given to groups like L'Association des Francophones et Francophiles du Nord-Ouest (AFFNO). AFFNO connects and promotes education, language and French Canadian culture throughout Northwestern B.C. through events like the four-day Sugar Shack Festival d’Hiver. According to Executive Director Patrick Witwicki, the Sugar Shack Brunch is AFFNO's biggest family-friendly event that brings the community together. “Funds allocated by the City of Prince Rupert’s Community Enhancement Grants go towards securing the venue for the main event, the Sugar Shack Brunch at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre,” Witwicki says.
