A new study estimates that BCLC’s head office has had an economic and social impact of $3 billion on the community of Kamloops since it opened on April 1, 1985.
The economic and social impact of the B.C. Lottery Corporation’s head office on the Kamloops area was conducted for BCLC by Dr. Peter Tsigaris, an economist at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), using data from the 2024/25 fiscal year and from 40 years of operations to estimate the annual and cumulative economic impact.
The report estimates BCLC’s head-office annual economic impact for 2024/25 at $96.7 million, up from $72.6 million five years earlier. In addition, the study estimates that for every 2 full-time jobs at BCLC’s Kamloops office, 1.3 full-time jobs are created in Kamloops and 2.6 are created provincewide.
“As a social purpose company, BCLC strives to put human connection at the heart of what we do, to help players, partners and communities thrive and grow,” said Pat Davis, President and CEO of BCLC. “This updated study proves that how we show up in the community matters — to families, non-profits, to the arts and to our staff. We’re part of a team here, and proud to call Kamloops our home.”
“BCLC has been a cornerstone of Kamloops’ economic and social landscape for four decades and has helped shape our community over the long term - from job creation and local investment to community partnerships and social responsibility. BCLC plays an integral role in Kamloops’ continued growth and vibrancy,” said Kelly Hall, Kamloops Deputy Mayor.
The study found that over one third of employees volunteer for community initiatives, contributing an average of approximately 170 hours per year per volunteer, up from an average of 51.2 hours reported five years ago. Employee charitable giving is equally embedded within BCLC’s workforce, with 70 percent of employees donating to charity.
“BCLC is a strong partner in our community and contributes to the well-being and lifeblood of Kamloops,” said Bernadette Siracky, President and CEO at the Kamloops Food Bank. “We have been the grateful recipient many times of the generosity and kindness of BCLC employees who are always finding new and creative ways to give back and fund crucial programs at the food bank. We’re here to help people access food when they need it the most, and BCLC has been there on the ground to help us achieve that.”
BCLC’s head office is located in Kamloops, with a corporate office in Vancouver and a presence in communities throughout British Columbia with employees on Vancouver Island, in B.C.’s North and in the Interior. Over the past 40 years, BCLC has generated $30 billion for the Province, which it uses to support education, health care, charitable and community organizations.
