History was made when the 2021 Oscars nominees were announced, with the most diverse slate of actors and actresses in the awards’ history highlighting the “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” categories. Now, the focus shifts to which of these talents will claim the honours – and PlayNow.com players are placing their Oscars bets.

This year was the first time in Oscars history that the Best Actor category featured a majority of actors of colour. The late Chadwick Boseman (1.05 odds) is currently listed on PlayNow.com as the clear favourite to posthumously win, taking 31 per cent of bets placed on PlayNow.com for Best Actor for his compelling performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Boseman’s stiffest competition includes Anthony Hopkins (8.00) for his performance in The Father, and Riz Ahmed (15.00), who made history this year as being the first-ever Muslim actor to be nominated in this category for his role in Sound of Metal. Steven Yeun (29.00) also became the first Asian-American actor to receive a Best Actor nomination for his performance in Minari.

Viola Davis (2.75) is once again making her mark this year, up for Best Actress for her performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Of the bets placed on this category, 38 per cent are on Davis to win. In fact, this is the fourth Oscar nomination for Davis, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2008, for Best Actress in 2011, and won the honour in 2016 for Best Supporting Actress. Carey Mulligan (2.25) is the one who stands in her way to win her first-ever Best Actress award, for her powerful performance in Promising Young Woman.

Nomadland (1.14) has six nominations this year, and is currently the undisputed betting favourite to win Best Picture. Of the bets placed on this category, 28 per cent are on Nomadland to win Best Picture. The Netflix-powered hit The Trial of the Chicago 7 (6.50), however, also has six nominations this year, with 16 per cent of the bets for Best Picture. Also in the running are Minari (16.00) and Promising Young Woman (19.00)
