A group of 15 colleagues from a Vancouver-based Irish bar have plenty to “sláinte” (cheers) over, after winning $1 million from the August 16, 2024 Lotto Max draw.
James Browne, who coordinated the lottery purchase on behalf of the group, announced the news in their shared chat.
“I scanned the first few tickets on my BCLC Lotto! App, and won $20,” recalled Browne. “The last ticket was the big winner. I walked down to Kingsgate Mall to double check the ticket as I needed to make sure.”
Once Browne told the group they’d won, it took everyone “a good 20 minutes” to believe the win was real. Their disbelief was understandable, because as Browne says, “This is the first time we ever played together.”
The group already celebrated at Foy’s Irish Bar where they all work, but they plan on having another celebration together, also at Foy’s.
“Surreal, unreal and blessed!”
Most of the group are from Ireland and expressed that this win is very special as they are currently living away from their families.
Browne purchased the winning ticket at Circle-K on Davie and Bidwell Street in Vancouver.
So far in 2024, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $98 million from Lotto Max. Lotto Max is a nationwide lottery game drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays after 7:30 p.m. (PST).
