Naming Conventions

There are two types of naming conventions that are of interest: Titles and File/Folder names. They are used to assist authors in finding the correct file within the AEM author user interface.

Titles

Titles are the names of files and folders assigned by the creator.

  • Titles and folders within the documents, reports and articles folders should be in title case (ie. BCLC Annual Report 2016)
  • Titles and folders within the global folder are generally all lowercase, however many files have pre-existing names that do not follow this rule (the naming convention in global is not as strict)
  • Spaces are allowed

See the Title label highlighted in red below for an example (“New Horizons Parq”).

File Names and Folder Names

File names and folder names are automatically generated by AEM and are based on the Title entered by the creator of the file or folder.

  • File names and folder names should always be lowercase
  • No spaces, if necessary, fill in spaces with "–"

See the Name label highlighted below for an example (“new-horizons-parq.pdf”).

Note: When no Title is assigned by the author, the Name will be used (and vice versa); please see the example highlighted in red below. It has no folder names in light grey under the Title whereas the folders on the right column do.

This sometimes happens when there is a prompt for only one field or the other (Title or Name).
