BCLC is proud to give back to the citizens of B.C. and help communities grow. Revenue generated by gambling goes back to the Province of B.C. and is distributed in a variety of ways, including to communities through Host Local Government payments and the Province of B.C.’s Community Gaming Grants program.

In 2024/25, Casino Nanaimo contributed to the Nanaimo community and economy in a variety of ways. Here are just a few.

Strategic Infrastructure Reserve

In 2024, the City of Nanaimo allocated its share of gambling revenue from hosting Casino Nanaimo to the City’s Strategic Infrastructure Reserve (SIR) and to offset property taxes. The SIR supports a range of capital projects and initiatives through annual contributions from both gambling revenue and FortisBC. 

In 2024, $3.5 million from the SIR was used to fund several community-based projects, including:

  • $1.76 million toward the new Harewood Artificial Turf Fields, alongside support from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
  • $833,187 for transportation initiatives, including pedestrian safety measures and traffic calming.
  • $545,000 for property purchases.
  • $64,950 in grant funding to the Nanaimo Curling Club to support chiller repairs ahead of the curling season.
Loaves and Fishes

Local Love BC: Loaves & Fishes Food Bank

BCLC launched a unique fundraising experience that had double impact in communities across B.C. The campaign supported businesses and Food Banks, across the province, in select municipalities. In Nanaimo, the campaign supported the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank. Its successful Food 4U Food Recovery Program partners with local grocers to make sure perishable food is not going to waste. 

Did you know?

In 2024, Casino Nanaimo supported a wide range of local organizations and community initiatives through $33,700 in charitable donations. Beneficiaries included the Nanaimo District Hospital Foundation, Dragon Boat Festival, Food 4 Schools, Island Crisis Society, COCO Café, Wounded Warriors, Women of Influence, and other community groups and events
