Infrastructure improvement

In 2024, the City of New Westminster used provincial gambling revenue from hosting Starlight Casino to fund several infrastructure improvement projects aimed at enhancing community safety, connectivity, and quality of life. This included investments in:

  • Active transportation improvements, such as new and upgraded sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and lighting along key routes.
  • Rail crossing safety upgrades in Queensborough.
  • Streetscape and public space improvements in Uptown New Westminster.

Additionally, gambling revenue supported the development of the Queen’s Park Petting Farm Master Plan which aims to foster environmental stewardship and biodiversity while honouring the Indigenous cultures who have cared for the land for generations. This plan outlines a phased transformation of the site into a space focused on nature, outdoor programming, and environmental literacy. In 2024, early changes included:

  • Installation of undulating Coast Salish forms within the landscape to restore soil and support native plant and animal life.
  • Renovation of outdoor pavilions to host public outdoor classes and workshops.
  • Installation of an accessible wooden boardwalk.
