BCLC isn’t just a workplace for Tiana Roy – it’s a family legacy.

When Tiana first started working at BCLC in 2007, it wasn’t her first encounter with the organization’s community. Her mother, Karen Davies, had already been working as a software developer on BCLC’s gaming platforms for almost twenty-three years. In that time, BCLC had become a big part of their family.

“We all went to the BCLC summer barbecues, the Christmas parties. Our stocking stuffers were filled with BCLC swag!” Tiana laughs, reminiscing on the earlier years of her life. “BCLC was our life, pretty much.”

At 19 years old, Tiana was hired by BCLC as a summer student from Thompson Rivers University’s Computer Systems Operations & Management program, but she’d “worked” at BCLC before – as a ninth-grade student participating in the “bring your kid to work day” tradition.

She remembers being scanned at security and getting her badge as her mom brought her behind the scenes to explore a world of cutting-edge technology.

“BCLC has always been a high-tech company – and I was fascinated with everything BCLC had to offer. We got to video conference with the other kids in the Vancouver office and I thought it was the coolest thing ever!”

Now, eighteen years after she was first employed as a summer student, Tiana has worked her way up to manage the operations of BCLC’s Customer Support Centre. While Karen retired in 2015 with thirty years of service under her belt, it’s still an institution for Tiana’s family: her sister, Amanda Best, is now an employee, too, working as a team lead for inside sales in the lottery line of business.

Reflecting on the way BCLC has been embedded into her life (and vice versa), Tiana says it makes her feel more connected – to her job, her family and her community.

“Kamloops is small,” she smiles. “My whole life, I’ve always been running into people I know through BCLC when I’m out and about around town – whether they’re people I work with now or people my mom worked with over thirty years ago! Some of them have truly watched me grow up, through all the stages of my life.”
